Alstom Expands Rail Infrastructure with New Service Depot in Kazakhstan

New facility aims to improve locomotive reliability and strengthen rail connectivity along the growing Middle Corridor trade route

Arys, Kazakhstan, 5 June 2026 – Alstom has announced the development of a new electric locomotive service depot in Arys, a major railway hub in Kazakhstan’s Turkestan region. The project is designed to enhance railway maintenance capabilities and support the growing demand for efficient rail transportation across domestic and international networks.

The new depot will provide maintenance services for electric locomotives operated by Kazakhstan’s national railway system. Once operational, the facility will be capable of servicing up to 120 locomotive sections per month, helping improve operational efficiency and reducing downtime across the rail network.

Industry experts view the investment as an important step toward strengthening rail infrastructure in Central Asia. As global trade routes continue to evolve, railway operators are focusing on improving reliability, capacity, and service quality to support increasing freight and passenger movement.

The depot is strategically located along the Middle Corridor, an important transportation route connecting Asia and Europe through Kazakhstan. The corridor has gained growing attention in recent years as businesses seek efficient alternatives for international cargo transportation and supply chain connectivity.

The project forms part of a broader investment program under an agreement between Alstom and the Government of Kazakhstan. The initiative includes developing multiple service centers nationwide to improve railway maintenance operations and support long-term transportation growth. The overall investment program is valued at approximately €50 million.

Railway modernization continues to be a key focus for transportation providers worldwide. Advances in maintenance technology, digital monitoring systems, and predictive servicing solutions are helping operators improve asset performance while reducing operational costs and service disruptions.

The new facility is also expected to contribute to regional economic development through job creation and infrastructure investment. According to project estimates, the wider service center network will create hundreds of employment opportunities while supporting the growth of Kazakhstan’s transportation sector.

Market observers believe investments in railway infrastructure will remain essential as countries seek to strengthen supply chains, improve cross-border connectivity, and support sustainable transportation. The Arys depot further positions Alstom as an important contributor to the modernization of rail networks and the development of efficient freight and passenger transportation systems.
