“We've created a culture where quality isn't something checked at the end of a project—it's built into every step of the process”

The future of construction is not being shaped on the jobsite alone. Increasingly, it is being engineered in manufacturing facilities, coordinated through digital platforms, and assembled through integrated systems long before crews arrive in the field. As projects become larger, schedules tighter, and labor resources more difficult to secure, owners are searching for new ways to reduce risk while maintaining quality and predictability. The answer for many has been a shift toward modular construction and prefabrication—not simply as construction methods, but as strategic business solutions. Baker Group recognized this shift early.

Founded in 1963 and today operating as a 100 percent employee-owned company, Baker Group has spent decades building a reputation as a trusted mechanical, electrical, , automation, and specialty contractor. Yet the company’s recent evolution reflects a broader understanding of where the industry is headed. Rather than viewing prefabrication as an isolated capability, Baker Group has embraced a manufacturing-driven approach that reimagines how complex projects are designed, coordinated, fabricated, and delivered. This evolution is rooted in a simple understanding: modern construction challenges demand more than traditional execution.

Across the industry, owners face mounting pressure from compressed schedules, labor shortages, supply chain uncertainty, and projects that continue to grow in both size and complexity. While these challenges affect virtually every market segment, they become particularly pronounced in large-scale industrial and hyperscale developments, many of which are located in smaller communities where skilled labor resources are limited. For Baker Group, solving these challenges begins with proactive planning and early collaboration. The company has invested heavily in Building Information Modeling (BIM), Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), and digital coordination processes that provide greater predictability before fabrication or installation begins. This planning-first approach helps eliminate uncertainty, reduce risk, and create confidence for clients navigating increasingly demanding project environments.

The company’s philosophy is centered on a belief that quality, safety, and efficiency are non-negotiable elements of every project, forming the foundation of the value Baker Group delivers. Beyond those expectations, the company believes true differentiation comes from building strong client relationships and a genuine commitment to helping them succeed. “Quality, safety, and efficiency are expected today,” says Brandon Hummel, Executive Vice President, Baker Group. “What truly differentiates a contractor is the ability to be invested in a client’s success and consistently bring solutions to the table.”

Unlike traditional fabricators that simply manufacture components from completed drawings, Baker Group often becomes involved much earlier in the process. Working alongside owners, engineers of record, architects, and project stakeholders, the company helps transform conceptual designs into integrated modular solutions that can be efficiently manufactured and deployed. This distinction is significant.

Many organizations can fabricate. Far fewer possess the in-house engineering, design coordination, modeling, and multi-trade expertise necessary to integrate entire systems into a cohesive modular solution. Baker Group’s ability to unite mechanical, electrical, structural, automation, and specialty construction disciplines under one roof allows the company to function as a true modular integrator. The result is a level of flexibility and innovation that extends well beyond conventional prefabrication.

On one project, the company developed a modular solution that addressed complex structural loading challenges by distributing equipment loads across multiple building members. Rather than simply creating a fabricated component, the modular system became an integrated part of the building’s structural framework. On another initiative, Baker Group became the first prefabricator within a global hyperscale construction program to successfully complete bench testing and end-of-line testing for a custom Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU) module—technology now deployed internationally. These accomplishments reflect a broader transformation taking place within the organization.

Over the past several years, Baker Group has intentionally shifted from what leadership describes as a prefabrication mindset to a manufacturing mindset. The distinction is more than semantics. It represents a fundamental change in how projects are executed, quality is managed, and value is delivered. Significant investments have been made in logistics infrastructure, manufacturing quality systems, process standardization, and advanced production capabilities. The company’s achievement of ISO 9001 certification in early 2025 further reinforces its commitment to consistency and continuous improvement.

For Rob Cross, Chief Operating Officer, the certification represents more than compliance with a quality standard. “We’ve created a culture where quality isn’t something checked at the end of a project—it’s built into every step of the process,” he says.

Technology has played a central role in enabling this transformation. Baker Group transitioned from paper-based workflows to fully digital project execution several years ago, creating greater visibility across every phase of manufacturing and construction. Clients increasingly demand real-time information about project status, production progress, and delivery schedules. Digital workflows allow the company to provide that transparency while maintaining tighter control over quality and execution. The benefits extend beyond efficiency.

As an employee-owned organization, Baker Group places considerable emphasis on accountability, ownership, and long-term relationships. The company believes successful partnerships are built through consistent performance, transparency, and a willingness to do exactly what has been promised. That philosophy extends internally as well. Housing multiple trades under one organization creates opportunities for deeper collaboration, stronger coordination, and more predictable project outcomes. Rather than operating in silos, teams work toward shared objectives with a collective focus on solving client challenges.

In the long run, Baker Group sees continued growth not as a matter of expansion for its own sake, but as a process of evolving alongside its clients. Investments in automation, advanced manufacturing technologies, material tracking systems, laser processing capabilities, and digital production tools will continue to strengthen the company’s ability to deliver increasingly sophisticated solutions. By combining construction expertise with manufacturing discipline, digital innovation, and an integrated approach to modular delivery, the company is helping redefine how complex projects move from concept to completion.
