R.L. Roberts: Powering West Texas with Quality, Grit, and Long-Term Vision
In Midland, Texas, reputation travels fast. Word of mouth carries weight, especially in industries where trust is earned job by job. For more than a decade, R.L. Roberts has built its name not on flashy marketing or rapid expansion, but on consistency—showing up, doing the job right, and standing behind the work long after the lights are turned on. What began in 2012 as a one-man operation with a single truck has grown into a fleet of 15 trucks and a team of 22 electricians. Yet Bobby Roberts, Founder & President of the company doesn’t describe the journey as explosive. He describes it as steady. “People say overnight success,” Bobby reflects. “But we’ve grown slow and steady. It’s been hard work every single year.”
That steady growth has been rooted in three core principles: quality, service, and value. But as anyone who knows the company will tell you, those words are more than a tagline—they are operational standards.
Built on Trades, Grit, and Mentorship
Bobby’s path into the electrical trade began in high school in Alabama when his father encouraged him to learn a vocational trade because his father saw what was coming. While at the time a study of trade was not glamorous, his father knew skilled labor would become invaluable. Bobby took his father’s advice and enrolled in the electrical trade program trade where his teacher, Phillip Howell, proved a major positive influence and mentor to Bobby as he quickly excelled in learning the skill of the electrical trade. After earning his master electrician license and moving to Midland in 2007, Bobby worked in maintenance for an oil and gas machine shop while building side jobs on evenings and weekends. When he reached 40 hours of consistent side work, he made the leap and launched R.L. Roberts full time.
Growth was intentional. One truck became two. Two electricians became four. Over 14 years, the company expanded deliberately, adding roughly a truck and a couple of team members each year. Today, roughly 70% of the team has been with the company for at least five years. Some have been there nearly a decade. In an industry where turnover can be common, that loyalty stands out.
Bobby takes pride not just in business growth, but in personal development. “I love training young guys who haven’t been taught the wrong way to do it,” he says. “I love seeing them buy vehicles, get married, buy homes.” Moreover, his leadership philosophy centers on effort and trust. “You can have talent,” he explains, “but effort builds trust. And trust creates success.” That mindset has shaped a culture where mentorship and accountability coexist.
Delivering More Than Power: Quality Without Compromise
In West Texas, weather can test infrastructure quickly. Severe winter storms over the past several years have left businesses without power for extended periods. Many commercial clients now seek backup generator systems to prevent future shutdowns. Installing generators in active buildings is not simple. It often requires complete weekend shutdowns, where electrical feeds must be intercepted and new systems installed within a strict 36-hour window. If the job is not complete before Monday morning, the financial consequences are significant. “It’s risky,” Bobby admits. “You’re telling someone you’ll finish in 36 hours. If you don’t, it’s on you.”
But those high-pressure jobs are where the team thrives. They build camaraderie and demonstrate the company’s reliability under pressure. Beyond emergency preparedness, R.L. Roberts has earned recognition for attention to detail. Clients frequently comment not only on functionality but on the cleanliness of job sites and the organization of electrical panels. “It’s one thing for it to work,” Jay, Bobby’s brother and business consultant, explains. “But when they say, ‘That’s the cleanest job site I’ve seen,’ or ‘That’s the best-looking panel,’ that’s exceeding expectations.”
That attention extends to materials. The company prioritizes premium components and precise installations, ensuring systems exceed both industry and client standards.
Proactive Planning and Future-Focused Design
One of the company’s most significant differentiators is its forward-thinking approach. Rather than simply meeting current electrical demands, R.L. Roberts plans for future expansion. If a client requires a 600-Amp service but may grow beyond that capacity, Bobby designs systems with additional breaker space and pre-installed conduit stubs for expansion. Underground conduits are often oversized to accommodate future wiring without cutting concrete or disrupting operations. “It’s overkill,” Bobby admits with a grin. “But our customers appreciate it.”
This approach reduces long-term costs and prevents operational downtime during expansions. While bids may run approximately 10% higher than some competitors, Bobby is quick to point out that clients are receiving substantially more infrastructure and long-term flexibility in return. “I can show it on paper,” he says. “We might be 10% higher, but we’re giving 20% more product.”
Utility coordination can stall projects for months. Power companies often require six to twelve weeks to connect new buildings. R.L. Roberts counters this by engaging early—sometimes before ground is even broken. By coordinating with power providers well in advance, the company ensures that when construction is complete, buildings are immediately operational. This proactive approach saves developers significant time and expense.
Rising costs and labor shortages have intensified pressure across the trades. Clients operate within tighter budgets, and reliable skilled professionals are harder to find. Jay sees this as both a challenge and an opportunity. “Value is expertise,” he says. “It’s showing up, diagnosing the job correctly, finishing it in the shortest timeframe possible, and eliminating surprises.”
Transparent communication plays a critical role. Large projects often require change orders, but R.L. Roberts ensures clients are informed every step of the way. There are no end-of-project surprises—only clarity.
Lighting the Way: Innovation and Efficiency
Lighting has become another specialty area when it comes to construction sites. The company serves as the exclusive distributor and installer for Jellyfish Lighting across West Texas—a discreet LED track system designed for holiday, ambiance, and security use. Controlled via smartphone, the system allows homeowners to customize colors and patterns year-round.
Though the system represents a premium investment, its 20-year lifespan and elimination of recurring holiday installation costs make it attractive to many homeowners. It also enhances nighttime security with subtle perimeter lighting. On the commercial side, R.L. Roberts specializes in LED retrofits for warehouses, churches, and parking lots. Rather than automatically replacing entire fixtures, the team often installs retrofit kits within existing housings when feasible—saving clients’ money without sacrificing efficiency. “If I can save them money with a kit instead of selling new fixtures, I’m going to do it,” Bobby says candidly. “That’s a better attitude.”
Safety as a Non-Negotiable Standard
In a high-risk industry, safety cannot be an afterthought. Weekly safety meetings reinforce compliance, and proper personal protective equipment is mandatory on every job site. Licensed, certified electricians handle installations, and even warehouse personnel are encouraged to pursue licensing.
Jay underscores the importance of qualifications. “Safety starts with trained people. Not every company can say that.” Bobby notes proudly that the company has never had a workers’ compensation claim beyond minor cuts. Strict adherence to protocol protects both employees and clients from risk and liability.
Relationships That Last
Perhaps the strongest testament to R.L. Roberts’ approach is client retention. Approximately 99% of original customers remain clients today. Developers who partnered with the company in its early years continue to award new projects. Tenants moving into completed buildings often become customers themselves. The formula is straightforward, show up, do excellent work, answer the phone, and stand behind the warranty.
As Bobby puts it simply, “If you have a problem, we’ll be right there. In Midland and the surrounding 60-mile radius, that promise carries weight.” And for R.L. Roberts, it is not just about powering buildings—it is about powering relationships built to last.
